State power organizations and their membership bases are a critical part of the progressive infrastructure. These organizations anchor state and federal campaigns, civic leadership development efforts, and high-impact voter engagement programs reaching millions of voters each year. However, the tech tools that currently exist do not support these organizations in being able to see and analyze the data from their own programs. This research documents the extraordinary challenges these groups face with the current set of movement tech platforms and suggests some systemic solutions to support groups using their organizing and political data for effective power building going forward. Since the report was published, the author along with organizing and funding partners have begun implementing recommendations, including aligning national data hubs to strengthen their support for state programs, strengthening and streamlining data warehousing, and making data integration across tools easier with a standardized VAN sync.
